Orb measures various parameters of an Internet connection's quality in real time and calculates a value from 1 to 100, the Orb ScoreTM. Responsiveness (latency) in ms, reliability (uptime) and speed, along with time to domain name resolution (DNS) and time to first byte – i.e. the time it takes for a website to be delivered – are relevant values for the user experience.
We have installed a standard Raspberry Pi 5 Orb probe in some of our PoPs (e.g. Thalwil). It has a 1 Gbit/s Ethernet connection. Its computing power is comparable to that of a normal fibre optic router. We use it to measure the quality you can expect at home.
Orb is available free of charge and can be easily installed as an app. This allows you to measure and compare at any time. So you don't buy a pig in a poke.
Please note: The quality via a network cable is technically better than via Wi-Fi. A loss of 10 to 50% is common. Measurements with Wi-Fi are therefore not comparable with a network cable.
