What happens in the event of a power shortage?

Switzerland is facing an electricity shortage this winter. In preparation, the federal government has defined various variants of restrictions. In the worst case, the electricity grids would be shut down periodically. We therefore repeatedly receive enquiries about the electricity situation in our PoPs (Points of Presence).

Unfortunately, we do not have any information about when and for how long the power would be switched off in our PoPs. Our PoPs are mostly located in buildings operated by third parties. There is no possibility to procure energy individually.

An internal project group will check the reliability of our mission-critical services.

Datacenter

Our core IP PoPs are located in various domestic and foreign data centres, e.g. at Green.ch, Equinix, Interxion, Rechenzentrum Ostschweiz, EKT, IWB, ColoBâle, NorthC and Data11. If you have any questions about securing the energy supply, please contact the operator.

Fiber7 PoPs

Almost all Fiber7 PoPs are located in Swisscom headquarters. We rent the product "Colocation and building infrastructure" and therefore have no influence on the energy procurement in these buildings. At present, not all PoPs are equipped with uninterruptible power supply (UPS). Swisscom allows tenants to install their own UPS; however, the batteries must be installed in a dedicated room. Apart from the fact that often no separate room is available, this approach is neither practicable nor economical. We are currently in contact with Swisscom and are negotiating the corresponding contractual clause (item 4.3 in the document "Service Description Space and Energy").
