What is the difference between P2P and P2MP (XGS-PON)?

The key difference between active and passive access technology is the use of fibre. In the point-to-point network structure (P2P) of an active fibre optic network, each subscriber receives its own optical fibre, which is terminated at an access node - the optical concentrator. In a point-to-multipoint network structure (P2MP), the optical fibre is used on the first section of the route as a shared medium for several customers. It is only at an optical splitter that the signals are divided between individual customer connections.

We recommend the following hardware for the two different network structures:

  • P2P - Fritzbox! 5490
  • P2MP - Zyxel AX7501-B0
